Santa Maria Church Section
Renewable Material Case

mamostudio is recognized for its commitment to creating architectural designs that are both familiar and comfortable for everyday use while addressing fundamental environmental issues. Initially, the studio concentrated on thermal comfort and energy conservation. In early projects such as Santa Maria Church, they focused on lowering indoor temperatures without relying on air conditioning by implementing roof opening strategies. In subsequent projects, green roofs were frequently employed as cooling mechanisms. Material efficiency and the use of local materials were other strategies adopted to minimize carbon footprints. Whenever possible, mamostudio continuously pursued these practices, steering their approach toward sustainable development.

Several research initiatives undertaken include:

  • The scarcity of public green spaces in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia,
  • Wood as a renewable material sourced from coconut and rubber plantations,
  • The social concept of magersari in urban village formation,
  • Urban agriculture and spatial water management.

These aspects have been developed in various projects, although not all projects could be designed based on these research principles.
