Relativitas is a book written by Adi Purnomo in 2005, detailing his discoveries and thought processes in his architectural practice at that time. Here is an excerpt from its introduction:
After some time immersed in the world of architecture as a practitioner, I have felt the strong forces pulling the profession away from the broader world. The spectrum of reality is vast before our eyes. Shouldn’t there be many possibilities that can occur? Yet, when it comes to the practical world, this spectrum seems to narrow. The idiom of big cities and large offices, high-value projects, always appears to be the dominant space of activity. A few years ago (and perhaps still today), Jakarta was almost always the top choice for new graduates to start their careers. During the crisis, we saw a sharp decline in the absorption of new graduates, with many practitioners even shifting to other fields. Is it true that this profession can only survive and develop by serving a particular layer or class of society?
