Key : Green Urban Space, Conservation and Building Re-use
The Stockholm City Library and its three annexes were designed by Gunnar Asplund in 1926. The site is adjacent to Observatory Hill. The strategy is to integrate new buildings into the spaces between the library and the three annexes. The roof of the new buildings will be level with Observatory Hill, creating a public open space that can be used for various purposes in the summer or other suitable seasons. Meanwhile, the pond behind the library can be transformed into an ice-skating rink during the winter. As library technology advances, public spaces are becoming more efficient, and libraries are increasingly used as social hubs since current information is accessible online from anywhere. The new library will serve as a space for face-to-face interaction and as an experience of the city’s historical and contemporary spaces.
