Key : Urban Green Space, Water Sensitive Development
During the New Order era, all city squares were fenced to control public activities. The revitalization of this square began with removing the fences to declare that the square belongs to the city and its residents. A large pedestrian path, 15 meters wide, was added around the perimeter and planted with large trees, allowing for public activities such as sports and other events. This pedestrian path connects to the Gesibu building, which has historical significance in Banyuwangi. Uniquely, Gesibu has a stage facing both the large square and the building itself. Several sports spots, such as volleyball, basketball courts, and a skateboard park, are located between the stage and the large soccer field. Flagpoles and lights also serve as supports for bird cages, accommodating the local tradition of bird singing competitions. Since its opening, the square has become very active day and night, especially during the fasting month. Organizing street vendors has become an additional challenge due to the increasing number of merchants exceeding initial expectations.
