Disaster Prevention Center Design in Istanbul. Context and Objectives

Seismic Activity. Frequent Earthquakes : Turkey’s susceptibility to frequent earthquakes has driven the government to establish a specialized Disaster Prevention Center focused on earthquake information and preparedness.

Design Strategy. Building Configuration. Fragmented Layout : The center is designed with multiple small, separated buildings rather than a single large structure.

Foundation System : These buildings use a foundation system similar to that of a ship, treating the ground as a fluid. This approach allows the buildings to move with the ground during an earthquake, preventing collapse due to seismic shifting.

Integration with the Environment. Green Roofs and Visual Appeals

Green Roofs : The buildings are covered with green roofs, which serve dual purposes of aesthetic integration and environmental benefits.

Urban Green Space : From higher vantage points in the surrounding area, the center appears as an extended park, blending seamlessly with the urban landscape.

Outdoor and Evacuation Design

Interconnected Outdoor Spaces : The fragmented buildings create interconnected outdoor spaces. These outdoor areas not only enhance the center’s usability but also improve emergency evacuation routes.

Efficient Evacuation : The design ensures that every interior space has direct access to the outdoors, facilitating quick and efficient evacuation during emergencies.

The Disaster Prevention Center in Istanbul is a forward-thinking design that integrates earthquake resilience with community aesthetics. The fragmented building layout, ship-like foundation system, and green roofs collectively create a safe, functional, and visually appealing facility that serves both as an educational center and a vital emergency response hub.nse hub.
